Fish for 10 Gallon Tank: Stocking Plans for Nano Fish

By Published 13 min read

Eight ember tetras fill a standard 10 gallon tank, and a ninth puts it over. The limit comes from the floor, not the gallons. A standard 10 measures 20¼ × 10½ in (51.4 × 26.7 cm). That floor is 3.3 cm shallower than the 45 × 30 cm base most nano schools need. The tank holds about 16 cm of adult fish.

A 10 gallon holds one group of one small species, or one betta, plus shrimp and snails. Plans that stack a school, a bottom group and a centerpiece fail on floor and on volume. This guide covers freshwater fish only.

Pick a plan in 30 seconds

A 10 gallon is long and narrow

Nano fish use floor and swimming length more than height, so their tank sizes are given as base dimensions.

The standard 10 is longer than 45 cm but 3 to 5 cm short front to back. That gap puts a standard 10 just under the minimum in the ember tetra and pygmy cory guides. Species that need 60 × 30 cm, such as neons and harlequins, lose a quarter of their floor.

The RSPCA advises a tank larger than 45 × 30 × 30 cm, about 40 litres, which a 10 gallon is not. A 24 × 12 in 15 gallon clears every base in this guide.

How many fish fit in a 10 gallon tank?

About 16 cm (6.5 in) of adult fish, measured without the tail. That is one school of 8 fish about 2 cm long, or one betta and a few snails.

Table: How many fish fit in a 10 gallon tank

38.7 litres

32.9 litres
Divided by 2 litres per cm of adult fish
About 16 cm of fish

The 2 litre figure is the cautious end of the RSPCA allowance of 1.5 to 2 litres per centimetre of fish, tails excluded. A 5 cm (2 in) sand bed alone takes up about 6.6 litres.

Eight embers at 2 cm use 32 litres, the whole budget. Ten need 40. A 7 cm betta plus 8 embers needs 46. Six pygmy corydoras at 3 cm need 36, more than the tank holds.

The old one inch per gallon rule treats a 7 cm betta like three and a half embers. Body weight rises with roughly the cube of length (Froese 2006), so a fish twice as long weighs about eight times as much.

The aquarium fish stock calculator runs this check alongside base, group and water checks. It flags a standard 10 as narrower than the 45 × 30 cm reference, and it rejects 10 embers outright.

Both flags are correct, and they are why every plan below uses one group at its minimum size. No calculator sees temperament or feeding, so watch the fish after every addition.

Betta

The largest fish a 10 gallon supports, at about 7 cm. In a 2024 study, 13 males were most active and least stressed in a planted 19.3 litre tank, half a 10 gallon. Keep one per tank with floating plants and slow flow, and see the betta tank mates guide before adding anything.

Ember tetra

The best school for most 10 gallon tanks. Embers swim slowly in midwater and accept soft to medium tap water. Eight is both the minimum group and the most the budget allows, so they are the only fish. Full care is in the ember tetra care guide.

Exclamation-point rasbora

The smallest common schooler, at 1.6 cm. Eight use 25.6 litres, which leaves room for one male scarlet badis. Shops often sell it as chili rasbora, so buy from a seller who names Boraras urophthalmoides, and keep one Boraras species per tank.

Chili rasbora

The ember’s size and budget, with stronger colour and weaker nerves. Chilis need a mature, shaded tank with gentle flow. The chili rasbora guide sets 45 litres for a new setup. In a 10 gallon, add them only once the tank is well established.

Phoenix rasboras need pH 6.5 or lower, as the chili and phoenix comparison shows.

Endler’s livebearer

The best fish for hard tap water. Wild males measure up to about 1.5 cm (Poeser et al. 2005), and shop fish run larger. Keep males only, since one female starts a colony that broods every 23 to 24 days. The wild species is Endangered, so ask for pure, captive-bred stock. Endler’s hybridise with guppies.

Least killifish

One of the smallest fish in the world, and a livebearer despite the name. A pair needs only 12.5 litres, the lowest figure for any fish here.

Keep the species alone, since males are prey for anything larger. Adults rarely eat their fry, so the colony grows slowly. See the least killifish guide.

Scarlet badis

A micropredator that stalks live food among plants. One male, alone or with two females, uses 12 litres. It eats shrimplets and often refuses flakes, so supply microworms or daphnia.

Two males fight, so keep one. Breeding and diet are in the scarlet badis care guide.

Sparkling gourami and pea puffer

A sparkling gourami pair or trio needs a tank to itself. A trio uses 24 litres, and keepers report it killing adult shrimp.

A pea puffer also needs a species tank, alone or as one male with two females. It eats snails, refuses most dry food and nips slow fish. Wild puffers are listed as Vulnerable, so buy captive-bred.

Shrimp and snails

Two to four Amano shrimp eat algae, and their larvae need salt water, so numbers never rise. Cherry shrimp breed from a start of 10, but every fish here eats shrimplets, as the shrimp safe fish ratings show. Nerites clean glass above pH 7, and ramshorns breed only as fast as the food allows.

Bottom feeders and algae eaters

No pleco or algae-eating fish fits. Bristlenose plecos reach 12 to 15 cm, and otocinclus need a group of 6 that starves in a clean tank. Amano shrimp, nerites and an algae scraper do the job instead.

5 stocking plans for a 10 gallon tank

One plan per tank. Each lists the temperature, pH and hardness its animals share. Test the tap water first and pick the plan it fits. Every plan assumes a cycled, planted tank, a sponge filter and a tight lid.

Plan 1: Betta Solo

  • Stock 1 betta, plus 3 Amano shrimp or 2 nerite snails
  • Shared water 25-26 °C, pH 7.0-8.0, GH 5-15 with nerites
  • Fish load 7 of 16 cm
  • Level Easy

Floating plants, a cave and a turned-down filter let the betta rest near the surface. Add the shrimp a week before the betta, and keep a spare container ready, since some bettas hunt shrimp.

Plan 2: Ember School

  • Stock 8 ember tetras, 3 Amano shrimp, ramshorn snails
  • Shared water 23-25 °C, pH 6.0-7.0, GH 6-10
  • Fish load 16 of 16 cm
  • Level Easy to moderate

Dense stems at the back and sides leave an open lane at the front. Amano shrimp are too large for embers to eat, while cherry shrimplets are not. The calculator flags this plan for the 25 cm depth, and 8 is the most a standard 10 holds. Swap in 8 chili rasboras for a mature tank, or 8 to 10 exclamation-point rasboras.

Plan 3: Micro Community

  • Stock 8 exclamation-point rasboras, 1 male scarlet badis, ramshorn or Malaysian trumpet snails
  • Shared water 23-25 °C, pH 6.5-7.0, GH 2-10
  • Fish load 14.8 of 16 cm
  • Level Moderate

The badis hunts among moss and leaf litter, and the rasboras hold midwater, out of its way. Add the rasboras first and the badis 2 weeks later, then feed live food 3 to 5 times a week. Skip shrimp and a female badis, since either pushes the plan past its limits.

Plan 4: Endler Bachelor Tank

  • Stock 6 male Endler’s livebearers, 2 nerite snails, 10 cherry shrimp optional
  • Shared water 24-26 °C, pH 7.0-8.0, GH 15-20
  • Fish load Up to 15 of 16 cm
  • Level Easy

Anubias, java fern and hornwort grow in hard water, and a hang-on-back filter suits these active fish. Shrimp colonies stay small, since the Endlers eat some shrimplets. Check every fish before it goes in, because one plain grey female starts a colony.

Plan 5: Least Killifish Colony

  • Stock 2 male and 4 female least killifish, 10 cherry shrimp, ramshorn snails
  • Shared water 20-26 °C, pH 7.0-8.0, GH 6-20
  • Heater Not needed if the room holds 20-24 °C
  • Level Easy

Hornwort and flame moss shelter fry and shrimp, and the sponge filter runs on low, since the species dislikes current. Feed crushed flake and microworms, and move surplus fish out as the colony grows.

A pea puffer trio with a snail supply, a sparkling gourami pair or a scarlet badis trio also fits the same 10. An Everglades pygmy sunfish male with 2 or 3 females also fits, unheated and fed live food. A planted cherry shrimp colony with no fish is the easiest of all.

The biggest fish a 10 gallon supports is a single betta at about 7 cm, and anything sold for a 10 as a predator outgrows it. The nano fish guide compares more small species.

How to stock a 10 gallon tank

  1. Cycle the tank without fish. Dose ammonia, run the filter and test every other day.
  2. The cycle is done when ammonia and nitrite read 0 within 24 hours of a dose and nitrate rises, usually after 3 to 8 weeks.
  3. Plant the tank and add snails or Amano shrimp.
  4. A week later, add the whole fish group at once.
  5. Test ammonia and nitrite on days 3 and 7. If either reads above 0, change 50% of the water and add nothing until two tests read 0.
  6. For Plan 3, add the scarlet badis 2 weeks after the rasboras. For Plan 5, add the shrimp before the killifish.

Gear and weekly care for a 10 gallon

Five pieces of gear cover every plan in this guide.

  • A sponge filter and air pump, for gentle flow and a shrimp-safe intake.
  • An adjustable 25 to 50 W heater, sized by room temperature in the heater guide.
  • A liquid test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH, plus a separate thermometer.
  • A tight lid, since Endler’s livebearers, Amano shrimp and killifish all leave through gaps.
  • Low to medium light for easy plants, as the aquarium light guide explains.

Each week, change 25% of the water, vacuum the sand and test ammonia and nitrite. Rinse the sponge monthly in removed tank water, never under the tap, since chlorine kills the filter bacteria. Feed only what the fish finish in a few minutes, because uneaten food is a major source of ammonia.

Fish for a 10 gallon tank: FAQ

How many fish can go in a 10 gallon tank?

A standard 10 holds about 16 cm of adult fish, measured without the tail. That fits 8 fish about 2 cm long, 6 male Endler’s livebearers or one betta, plus shrimp and snails.

What is the best fish for a beginner 10 gallon tank?

A single betta, 6 male Endler’s livebearers in hard water, or 8 ember tetras in soft to medium water. All three eat dry food.

Can a 10 gallon tank hold a community?

Only a small one. Eight exclamation-point rasboras and 1 male scarlet badis fit the budget. Most other mixes exceed it or share no water range.

What fish can live with a betta in a 10 gallon tank?

Nerite snails, and Amano shrimp if the betta leaves them alone. A betta plus a school needs about 46 litres, more than a 10 holds.

Can neon tetras live in a 10 gallon tank?

Not well. Neons need a 60 × 30 cm base, and a standard 10 gives about three quarters of it. Eight ember tetras fill the same role.

Is a 10 gallon tank big enough for guppies?

Not for a mixed group, since females reach 6 cm and breed constantly. Six male Endler’s livebearers fit instead.

Can pygmy corydoras live in a 10 gallon tank?

Six at 3 cm need 36 litres, more than a standard 10 holds once sand is in. A 24 × 12 in 15 gallon suits them.

Can shrimp live with fish in a 10 gallon tank?

Adults survive with every fish here except the betta, sparkling gourami and pea puffer. All of them eat shrimplets, so a colony stays small unless the tank has no fish.

Does a 10 gallon tank need a heater?

For Plans 1 to 4, yes. Least killifish, cherry shrimp and pygmy sunfish manage without one if the room holds 20 to 24 °C.

With more room, the options widen in the 20 gallon guide, and the 5 gallon guide covers the smaller size.
