Use established filtration and monitor ammonia and nitrite. Water taken from a mature aquarium doesn’t automatically make a new filter biologically mature.
Step 4: Remove the Adults After Spawning
Once you’ve confirmed spawning has finished, gently return the adults to their permanent aquarium.

Your job is to watch the fry and begin feeding when they become free swimming.

This is where a successful spawn can turn into a disaster.
You’ve protected the eggs, maintained the water and finally spotted tiny fry. Then you offer freshly hatched brine shrimp because everyone says it’s excellent fry food.
There’s one problem.
Newly free-swimming ember tetra fry may be too small to swallow baby brine shrimp.
The solution is to prepare microscopic food cultures before breeding begins.
First Food: Paramecium and Infusoria
Start with Paramecium or another culture containing suitably sized microscopic organisms.
Paramecium are single-celled microorganisms that provide live prey small enough for very young fry. The broader term infusoria describes mixed communities of microscopic organisms, so the actual food size and quality can vary considerably between cultures.
Don’t assume every jar of cloudy water contains enough suitable prey.

Seriously Fish suggests a minimum base footprint of 45 × 30 cm for the species. Use an appropriately sized permanent aquarium rather than housing an adult shoal indefinitely in a small breeding container.
Arrange the layout around dense vegetation at the sides and rear, leaving an open swimming area.
Java moss and other fine-leaved plants provide places for spawning and shelter. Floating plants can create shaded areas, while established leaf litter may support additional microorganism populations.
Use gentle filtration with a protected intake.
The advantage is a natural-looking aquarium where the fish can reproduce without constant intervention. The drawback is that many eggs and fry may be eaten before you ever see them.
Option B: A Dedicated Breeding Tank
Use a small, biologically established tank with simple furnishings and an accessible egg-protection system.
A spawning mop or moss clump encourages spawning in a manageable area. Protective mesh or clean marbles can create a refuge for eggs that fall to the bottom.
After spawning, remove the adults and leave the eggs in place.
